Once a product or an idea becomes the dominant one, their flaws, weaknesses, and shortcomings of become more glaring, annoying, even hated. We see this with market monopolies, ideologies, celebrities, and even in every aspect of our lives.
There is such a strong desire for new, different, or change that the dominant product, or idea is no longer sustainable without extreme forces being applied, or restrictions brought in. These in turn lead to disruption, revolution, or a rebellion. I don’t think there is any way to escape this cycle.
Historically we have seen this play out with empires that rise to power and is grinded down by their own dominance to an extent that they are no longer able to meet the desires of their own people for more, and better. We have seen this in so many corporations that became a monopoly and was inevitably dethroned by something different, or better.
We are slowly stepping into a time where the power of larger companies could be matched or even outmatched by a smaller company that leverages AI at scale. We are also at a time when the power and wealth is getting centralised, focussed and hoarded by technology companies and those that fund it. In one sweep we will see one type of dominance get pushed down, while another completely different and overbearing dominance rise up to change the society as we know it.
It has been over two decades since the rise of social media and we are still reeling with the repercussions of it. While it has made the world smaller, news more democratic, it has also corrupted society and normalised bigotry. It has overpowered checks and balances of all democratic powers and is now a vetal the society is forced to carry.
If we have not been able to effectively deal with social media and its fall out, I do not know how we will manage to see through the rise of the AI engines and all the lives it will roll through.
I wonder what type of disruption, revolution, or a rebellion will help us work through this upcoming dominance. Will it be an elimination of the thinking machines like in Dune, or will we surrender and become meat batteries like in The Matrix? What if we truly assimilate and turn into a hive mind like in Pluribus? All of these feel like a Dark Mirror reality were we settle for an even drearier force.
Till I see light; nirvana remains allure.
